after importing contacts: generate passwords and notify users?
May 01, 2011, 02:05:22 pm
I'm still fairly new to Drupal and CiviCRM, and this seems like it would be an easy question, but I can't find the answer in the documentation or forums. Can someone please point me in the right direction?

I'm using CiviCRM in Drupal. I'm importing contacts from a previous database for our organization. I've successfully imported a test set of contacts. I need the "members" to be able to login as authenticated users in Drupal. How can I now notify the new members I've imported to tell them their login and password details? I know how to do this if I create a new user in Drupal, but I can't figure out how to do this with contacts I've imported.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

check the user_import module in drupal. there might be a newer module which does that functionality and more

Thanks for the user_import module tip. I saw that, but I figured that since so much of the integration with Drupal happens so seamlessly, I figured I must be missing something.

Did a little checking. The node_import module looks like it would do the job too. It also looks like the Migrate module would do the job too, but that seems like using a sledgehammer when I only need a ball-peen hammer.

Perhaps not enough people import contacts from previous databases to make this a built in feature of CiviCRM. I guess I've just been so impressed as I've been learning the system, that I thought there would be a tool in civi for that.

For someone searching for the same answers. Here's the documentation page for how to create drupal users for civicrm contacts:
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC40/Creating+a+Drupal+user+for+every+CiviCRM+contact

Thanks again for the help.

Depending on your use case, you may not require Drupal users--rather just that your Contacts can access their record and update it. In which case, you can use a checksum token as described here: http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC40/Mail-merge+Tokens+for+Contact+Data

Thanks hershel. Unfortunately, I have some content and permissions that require a drupal login.
