Base Directory Setting / Purpose

I have a Drupal installation in which the civicrm directory has been moved from sites/default/files/civicrm to sites/default/civicrm.

What should be the setting of the Base Directory? The help states "For Drupal installs, this is the absolute path to the location of the 'files' directory" - however, considering the above install is not in the files directory, should the Base Directory be set just to the absolute location of sites/default??

To clarify, this is separate from the civicrm installation files which are in sites/all/modules/civicrm

I suppose. I'm not sure, but you can certainly try and see if it errors. :)

So far it hasn't. That's why I was wondering about the purpose of that setting - what is the system looking for within the /files directory? If it's a civicrm one, as in /files/civicrm then

'normal' setup should have absolute values
sites/default/files/ to find sites/default/files/civicrm

Any my setup should be able to work with
sites/default to find sites/default/civicrm

I am trying to confirm that it's looking for a civicrm directory within whatever Base Directory is set at.
