How to create list of individuals associated with household memberships
May 06, 2011, 02:51:24 pm
I'm racking my brain trying to figure out how I can create a list of individuals who are members of a particular set of households, but can't for the life of me figure out how to do it...

Basically, what I want to do is this: My organization has both individual as well as family memberships (the latter which are applied to a household). I want to be able to create a list of all our database contacts who are members (either individually or through a household). This would allow us to email everyone or create a list of members that we can sort by last name (not just by display name with name of the household determining where it sorts).

I've managed to create a Smart Group of households that are current or grace members, but from there I can't figure out how to get a list of individuals associated with these set of households. I'd love for this to be a smart group I create.

Any ideas would be much appreciated. We're using CiviCRM 2.2.7 on Joomla. Thanks!

You'd get the individuals if they have a relationship of the type household member with one of the households in your Smart Group of current or grace members?

Right, but I can't figure out how to isolate my search by "Household member of" to only those in my Smart Group of households with memberships (either current or grace).

I can pull up a list of all contacts associated with households through the relationship category of "Household member of" OR I can create a list of households with membership, but I can't figure out a way to bring both search parameters together.

I have just entered a case on the demo site (used membership type Test Hommel ... if you are lucky it is still there). I get a list of all members, direct or indirect, with the standard function 'Find Members' because I set the relation 'Household member' as one that is automatically a member (membership type settings).
Then from that list you can create a group or smart group if you want to,  or mail directly from there. Do you use that option in the membership type settings?
Contact me on IRC (erik_h) if I have misunderstood you or if you are not sure what I am ranting about :-)

Thanks, Erik. Yes, I think you've understood me fine. I may have another issue, though. It appears that some sort of glitch is blocking me from adjusting the membership type settings for some of the principle membership levels we use (i.e. Family, Business).

I'm thinking that I might try creating a new membership level for each of the 'stuck' ones, as a sort of copy, and try to see if I can apply it as a second membership to everybody who has the original. Then, if I can get it working to my liking (with the membership type settings to allow inclusion of individuals within household memberships), I'll delete the original membership info.

Or is there another route you would recommend.

Thanks so much for your help.

Without checking I think you are right and probably will need to set up new membership types including the relationship-feature. I can imagine that can not be changed as it would require applying the relationship feature retrospectively....let me know how you get on!
