Tracking Bounces
January 14, 2008, 03:09:20 am
Hi,

We recently sent a large blast of mail using the UAS server. While about 10% are bouncing and are listed in the CiviMail report, there are people reporting not receiving mail. I spoke to two of them today and they both have yahoo.com.au accounts. They checked their spam box and the mail wasn't there either.

Is it possible that Yahoo is rejecting these mails in a way that cannot be detected by the bounce process?

Regards,

Hi Dave,

the emails that you are referring to are not being bounced or rejected they have been deferred by the yahoo.com.au server so we are doing what we are supposed to and deferring the delivery for however long the server told us to.  :)

We are looking into this currently,  will post more soon.

Hi Dennis, (sorry, I called you dave before, still before coffee here in california)

I just tested the service with my personal yahoo.com.au address and the email was delivered fine.

We are still checking into the deferral for the addresses that you are talking about specifically.  I sent an email to you asking that you send a test mailing using my yahoo.com.au address.  can you please do that with the email that you last sent?  I am wondering if there is some content in the email that might be triggering a filter.

Thanks for the quick response, Shane. I'll send that sometime today but you may not see it until tomorrow. 0600 here is 1100 California time the day before (I write this on Tuesday).

ok,  I saw the email that you sent and it looks fine so I do not think that is the problem.    All of the deferred emails did get sent however. We are investigating why some of the emails were deferred longer than others.  I do know that our ip addresses are not blocked as I was able to send a test email to several yahoo.com.au addresses.  also, our ips are totally clean.  will keep you posted.

I have checked with several of the intended recipients and they have not received the mail yet.

I might try to send out another one tonight, selecting all the people in our CiviCRM database who have yahoo.com.au email addresses.

I do not recall getting an email from you asking me to test with your account but I have been flooded by emails today and could have missed it. I'll try to find it again when I get home tonight.

ok, please put my yahoo.com.au address on that test email.

shanehillau[at]yahoo.com.au

so I can reply to it, unsub, etc.  just to be sure that all is working as expected.

also,  it would probably be good if you set up your own yahoo.com.au and put that on the test list as well.

ok, we tested the service and both dennis and I got the test emails to our yahoo.com.au addresses.

so this proves that our ip addresses are considered OK by yahoo and their spam filters say we are OK.

but the emails dennis initially mentioned still got deferred, i saw that,  so we are still investigating this.  does the community have any ideas?

Hi,

I heard back from yahoo and all they sent is just a boiler plate response about their whitelists and ways to to get the email delivered, etc. and we are already doing all those things.

something to consider might be Domain Keys:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DomainKeys

let me know if you are interested in implementing Domain Keys, however I cannot guarantee that it will help and I am not sure that it is necessary as we both received the test emails at the yahoo.com.au addresses.

I will forward this on to our developer for his opinion.
