How to create a public newsletter signup?
May 11, 2011, 07:01:42 am
We are using CiviCRM 3.3.5 with Joomla 1.5.22 and have tried to set up a short 2/3 field form on our homepage to have people sign up for a newsletter. We used a public profile but for some reason, it will not accept signee's unless they are signed in, which defeats the purpose. We could not find the standard form described in the Floss Manual, hence the public profile.
How do we create simple name/email signup form to feed into CiviCRM's database?
Thanks

Create a public profile and in the profile’s advanced settings check that all contacts created via this profile are added to a group (that is a Mailing List) – then email to that group. You can (and probably should) either add a CAPTCHA for that profile or review the group before mailing the contacts.

If you tried the above – is there any particular step that doesn’t work?
If you found the above helpful, please consider helping us in return – you can even steer CiviCRM’s future and help us extend CiviCRM in ways useful to you.

This is fine but as soon as a group is made Public so that it displays on the subscribe page the whole world can see the list of people in the group and the information that you request from them when they sign up.  Granted they have to know or stumble across the correct URL but that doesn't stop a Google bot finding this stuff and making it available in a Google search.

Can someone let me know if I am wrong because this is causing me some trouble?

Cheers

What URL(s) pattern are you referring to that will list everyone in a "Public" group? If you're referring to a Profile Listing - you can restrict access to profile listings via Drupal permissions and via ACLs. You can also use Limit Listings to Group - pointing to an empty group - if you need to give 'profile listings' permissions to anonymous for some profiles but not for others.
