While one hopes this does not happen in practice, if a lifetime member goes to the memberhip renewal page, their membership info is not displayed as there is no end date.

If they decide to purchase a 1 year membership fixed period membership, then this becomes the new membership type, and the end date is the lifetime membership start date + one year ( rather than the fixed period end date)

Since we are planning on adding section memberships to our sign up page (either through the membership+pricesets module or using ubercart_ civicrm_ products, it would be useful to at least display the lifetime status to avoid confusion.

This is a good idea for a minor improvement to CiviCRM core. You can either add to the list of nice to have enhancements on the 4.2 roadmap that the core team reviews for ideas each version, or try to make it happen by funding it directly.
