Newbie >Import >Civicontribute > Soft credit

I am inheriting a drupal based website for a high school non-profit crew team. The previous owner installed civicrm on the site for me so I could have a database to record our donors in our yearly fundraising drive. I'm hoping to integrate our paypal and send out some email newsletters. Whoo-hoo!

To learn both civicrm and drupal I installed mysql, phpmyadmin, and drupal on my mac snow leopard apache (without  using mamp). Next I have to install civicrm I suppose.

I have imported our current roster into contacts and made parent, child (rower), spouse relationships using the mapping and some custom fields to associate the donor with the rower (rower first name, last name, class, external id).

I imported a first round of donors in contacts in "ergathon 2010" group. Exported them to get their internal id to import with contributions in civicontribute.

Imported their spouses. Exported them to get their internal id.

I went to the server and exported the civicrm contribute  database to get the contribution ids.

My immediate question is how do I import the spouses to give them a soft credit for the contribution.

And I feel that what I'm doing is really so awkward, it must be wrong.

Thanks for listening.

I decided to import directly into the civicrm_contribution_soft table using a lookup table in excel to map my contribution id to the soft donor. It seems wrong, but it works.
