Save time with civicrm_dedupe_exception!

Don't you think clicking the "Save matching contact" button should add an entry to that table?

Seems intuitive to me, if you're explicitly telling CiviCRM that those two contacts are not a match, shouldn't it remember that fact?

Along those lines, when you save a contact, the "Matching contact found" warning should not pop up if you have already marked them as not a match.

@colemanw,

I have a concern with your first option which is when I don't know that they are duplicates or not. If I'm unsure, then the current behaviour allows me to save the contact, and come back later and deal with it.

I like your second idea. If they are not duplicates, then the "Matching contact found" is potentially dangerous. It might be that Careful User looks at the two and decides they are separate individuals, but later Hurried User merges them because it's the easiest solution.

Agreed. I'll file an issue for #2 since it's almost a bug.
Perhaps a solution for #1 would be a "remember this" checkbox by the "save matching contact" button.

While we're on this topic, I always get thrown by the text "Saved matching contact". Who is the matching contact? Is it the one I'm editing/adding or is it the other?

Could we relabel the button "Ignore potential duplicate and save anyway" (or something shorter!)
