civimember vs groups
May 23, 2011, 06:29:40 am
I'm working on a website for an organisation. On regular bases they sent out "mass" emails to organisations and contacts.
Groups is used to make mailinglists.

I activated Civimember, hoping it was possible to use memberships to add contacts in Mailing Recipients in civiMail or to be able to search on membership and groups so I could send mass emails using Actions. But both are not possible.

Too bad because it is really useful that contacts can inherit membership from organisations they work for  which is not possible with groups.

Now I was thinking of making a php script that looks in the civicrm_membership table for a specific membership type Id and looks for the contact_id in civicrm_group_contact table, and adds a new row with the group id of a certain group if it does not yet exist. status = Added.
The scrip should also do the oposite, remove contact_id if membership stoped.

-Will that work?
-What's the best /easiest way of doing this,
-is there another solution?
-Who has done that?

Have you considered making a Smart Group (recorded search) eg of all contacts (inherited or not) who are a Current Member - and then use that dynamic group for CiviMail?

Thanks a lot.
I found what I needed with search builder (membership type) => new smart group
I should read a bit more about search before losing trust in civicrm  ;D
I think I will make a smart group for each mailing type.

Thanks for your time.

I did not find membership options in advanced search. In "find members" there were no actions for groups or smart groups.
But , I'm using CiviCRM 3.3.5 / Drupal 6.20
Are there new functionalities in 3.4 ?
I'm not ready yet to port to Drupal 7.

check out the Demo site - the Adv Search has an expandable section for Memberships - if this isn't showing on your site - check your Global Settings (not sure the precise section but covers elements that are displayed in Search etc)

Administer / Configure / Global settings / Settings - Site Preferences => Contact Search
Gotcha

I did not find anything in "Settings - Contacts Search". It might be useful if there was a reference to the "preferences #contact search page" in "Settings - Contacts search".

Civicrm is more powerfull then I thought, but it's hard to figure it out.

Thanks for helping so quick

 :D
