Upgrading from 2.06 to 4.01
May 23, 2011, 10:07:53 am
Hi.

I am very new at Joomla/civiCRM and inherited a website with very out of date components.  We're currently running civiCRM 2.06 and need to upgrade to 4.01.  I have read that I need to install 2.1 first but have also read that I should just uninstall and start over.

Can someone tell me what truly is best here?  And if uninstalling is the right way to go, I might need directions there too.  We're using Bluehost, if that helps....or further shows my ignorance.   :-\

Thanks!!
KP

Hi. Yes, your version is quite old and to upgrade to the newest version will probably take a few hours of work at minimum. The decision as to whether to upgrade or install fresh depends on the data in your current CiviCRM--do you need that data?

If you only need the basic contact data, you could export that and then install a fresh up-to-date version, and then import the data.

But if you need more than that, it might be worth it to do all of the upgrade steps to get to the latest version.

Instructions for either choice are here:

http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC40/Installation+and+Upgrades

If you upgrade, you will see there are a set of steps you must follow, i.e. incremental upgrades.

I do need the data but as long as I have it in an Access Database that I can refer to later, I am good.  In the process now of backing up everything I can in Access.

As I read the upgrade instructions to go from 2.04 to 2.1.0, you have to uninstall....which makes me think I am better off just starting from scratch since I will be uninstalling anyway.

And, since I am doing this, is Drupal easier than Joomla?  I might switch that out as well.

Thanks!

The uninstall procedure (required only for Joomla upgrades) is simple--it's really just a way to let you install the next version and have CiviCRM run the upgrade script. Of course eventually you would (should) need to upgrade your Joomla to the latest stable (and secure) versions as well.

Is Joomla easier? For many things, yes, Joomla is easier.

For many other things, Drupal is easier. Mostly more complicated tasks will be easier in Drupal.

The standard answer is that Joomla is considered more user-friendly by most and Drupal is considered more flexible and powerful by most. Using Drupal for CiviCRM is more popular than Joomla.
