Want user to edit family member profiles
May 23, 2011, 12:33:54 pm
I'm having difficulty figuring out how I can allow a user to update his family members' data.

So for example, I have a user Jane, and I've related her to her son, Joe, and I've specified that she can "view and update" his information with the checkbox. But when I login as Jane, I can't find any way to view Joe's info, much less edit it.

I played around with Drupal permissions, and eventually got it so that she could view and edit his information, but it also let her view and edit *all* of his and her information, like notes, memberships, etc. Is there any way that we can let her update just his profile information?

two options:

1. related contacts are displayed in the user dashboard. goto q=civicrm/user&reset=1 . However you can only edit default information (name and address i think)

2. You can also use profiles and use the contact id of the related contact and the contact can update that

3. You can link 1 and 2 and use a hook to modify the links to point to a profile. Check:

http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC32/CiviCRM+hook+specification#CiviCRMhookspecification-hookcivicrmlinks

which has an example

The above does require PHP/Drupal coding experience

Lobo, thanks very much for the helpful response. I've been on vacation for the last week, but I hope to try to take a look at this soon.
