First Thermometer Post !!! Thermometer "Block" in Joomla?
January 17, 2008, 09:22:19 am
I found 0 posts about Contribution Thermometers in the forum...so this is the first, I think.

I see the word "block" in the Contribution Page configuration, "should a thermometer block be displayed" - this is obviously Drupalese.

Is there an equivalent in Joomla?  A module, mambot, something?

Thanks,
Ken

I'm not aware of a way to use the thermometer in Joomla (altho of course others may have discovered something). That said, for 2.0 we've replaced that feature (which was pretty rough looking in any case) - with a Flash widget which we think / hope can be embedded almost anywhere. Check out the 2.0 sandbox for a demo:

Wow!  You DO live on this forum, don't you?

That's a nice widget, for sure.  I look forward to having it on my site.

Best,
Ken

Wow ... another great feature coming in 2.x

Two things I'd like to check.

1 - The text above the HTML to include says "Add this widget to any web page by copying and pasting the code below." Is this any page on your site? Or (what I'm hoping, and think), is that any page anywhere?

2 - If as I think, these Flash widgets can be placed on any site, is there any type of built-in tracking so that you can see which site(s) that you've placed the widgets on are actually creating the donations? I guess that this could be done with an add-on parm of a tracking code(which I don't see) or maybe the referring URL. Not mandatory, but would sure be nice.

The intent is for it to work on any page, anywhere. However, there are some evolving issues with flash widgets and linking - particularly on the commercial social networking sites (facebook, myspace etc.) - and so we'll need help from folks out there who can try it out and help us tweak things if needed to make it as useful as possible.

For example, the current setting on the "Contribute" button is to open the CiviCRM contrib page in a new window (target="_blank"). This seems to be preferred setting for some sites - but it caused a problem for me when I first tried it on the sandbox - since my Firefox pop-up blocker didn't allow the new page to open (even though this was a user-initiated click). Of course, once I realized the problem and added sandbox to my "permit pop-ups" - it worked ok. But this is likely to be an issue for some folks :-(

Currently, the widget can pass a WidgetID to the contribution page - but it's not in scope for 2.0 to do anything with that value. We'll get some experience and feedback and hopefully some contributions of code to extend this. I think recording the referring URL for contributions (rather than a widgetID) might be more useful - since the hope is that constituents will spread these widgets and they are not likely to modify the embed params themselves.

Thanks for the quick feedback. I am a but surprised that the pop-up blocker stopped the window since it was a user-initiated click, but maybe it has something to do with going thru flash first.

I went to add to your Karma points and hit what I thought was smile, but saw your point value go down. Then I looked closer and saw that it actually said smite Opps :-[ I quickly hit applaud and it seems to have reversed my vote ... whew
