CiviCRM sent out "test SNMP" mail but is not able to "send an email"
June 08, 2011, 09:01:57 am
Hi,

I have some problem in using CiviCRM to sent out mail usign the "send an email" command form a contact page.

Setting the mail in the menu

CiviCRM » Administer CiviCRM » Global Settings » Settings - Outbound Mail
and pressing the button "save and send test email"
The mail is generated correctly and arrives correctly.
No log file is generated

instead if I go to a contact and press the button
actions > send an email

the mail is not sent and the message
authentication failure [SMTP: Authentication failed. (code: 221, response: srv-hp4.netsons.net closing connection)]
is displayed

once the error is generated also a 10meg log file is created is very large so I placed on the home page of the web site
wwwDOTsostienilsostegnoDOTcom/CiviCRM.log

I'm using CiviCRM for Joomla release 3.4.2

Any help is appreciated
Giovanni

If I had to guess, I'd say it's because you haven't set up the mailbox (by default @FIXME.ORG)

Hi,

thank you for the answer,

I do not have access to the mailbox configuration so I cannot change it.
Anyway reading the page you link I discovered that

mail().  This is the default option and if it works for you, you should use it.

I set it and it works fine!!!

thank you!

Hi,

Long story short, you have to set the mail account. If you don't, you will have a lot of issues and you don't handle bounces.

Xavier,
I do not understand you say that

"I'd say it's because you haven't set up the mailbox (by default @FIXME.ORG)"

Once I setup the SMTP account the test mail is sent out correctly, instead once I use the command to send a mail form my account I have the error.

so my guess is that there is something different between the two way to access the mailbox, the test one and the real one.

Yes, it is sent differently.

You need to set up the mailbox in civicrm, the one needed to handle the bounces. Until you do that, it won't work properly for the sending (because it is using this mailbox address at a technical level when sending the email).

CiviMail system configuration is a complex task which requires system administrator level skills. Correct configuration is crucial to have your system running, to keep it off spam lists and black lists.

A chapter in our book "Understanding CiviCRM" is available online About CiviMail Configuration and describes how to do that.

To have a working mail system, you need to configure a mailbox, set up a 2 cronjobs, possibly creating a DNS record and put the right information in the right screen in CiviCRM.

If you have an error message or your mails aren't sent, that's likely that one of these steps have been missed.

Please do spend the time to read it, it will save you a lot of pain in the long run, both by having quicker a running system, and avoid having you being blacklisted (really, I learnt the hard way, it's time consuming ;)

The most common problems:

1) you haven't configured a mailbox, this mailbox doesn't support + notation (eg. if you are using MS exchange), you haven't properly added it in CiviCRM (you forgot the prefix)

[...]

Good luck!
