Civimail open and click tracking broken after move to new server [RESOLVED]
June 10, 2011, 11:42:18 am
I recently moved from shared hosting to a Linode with Ubuntu 10.4 and a Barracuda/Octopus Aegir setup. We sent out our first mailing since the move yesterday (which I am doing by manually browsing to mailing/queue every 30 minutes while we figure out why Civi cron jobs won't work). The mailing shows 0 opens and 0 clicks, and tracking for both is enabled. A low response for us is 70-100 opens and a dozen or so clicks. Are there known configuration adjustments that need to be made for the Barracuda setup?

@narayanis,

I don't know your setup so I can't help there. The open-tracking and click-through counts should be independent of that as they rely on the recipient visiting certain URLs. Were you or one of your team a recipient of the email? When you look at the source do the embedded links have the right format?

For open-tracking, the HTML-part of the email should finish with a link like ...
Quote
<img src="https://www.example.com/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/open.php?q=999999" width='1' height='1' alt='' border='0'>

For click-through, the links should be like ...
Quote
https://www.example..com/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=9999&qid=999999

Do the links look right? If you enter them into your browser, you should get the expected output (1x1 pixel image or the target of the link).

Also if you've moved domains, it may be that some recipient's mail clients will not open images from that domain, causing your open-tracking to under-count.

Interesting, I get a 403 when trying to hit open.php. Thanks for the lead! Is there a doc that details appropriate permissions on files within the Civi package? I couldn't find anything in the docs.

As far as permissions go, I think all you need to check is that the PHP code file (and all the directories above it, up to the Apache root) is readable by the process running Apache (www-data in my case).

As far as the 403 goes, it would be interesting to understand whether that's thrown by Apache or by Drupal or by CiviCRM. What do your Apache, Drupal, and CiviCRM logs say?

If someone else hits this issue when using the Barracuda/Octopus setup for Drupal, check this for a solution: http://drupal.org/node/1191636
