Strangeness on email configuration
June 16, 2011, 12:45:14 pm
We've recently moved a site to another server and at this point the email notifications for expiring memberships seems to have broken. I have changed the settings in the "Outbound Mail" area and it always tells me the settings are correct, although no test mails come through that way either. Even if I put a wrong password in the SMTP settings it tells me the settings are correct, and neither mail() nor Sendmail work (although, again, it says the settings are correct).

Where do I go next to test/adjust/configure?

Have you asked your host if they can see any errors recorded when you try to send email yet it's not sent?

No, I was assuming it was a CiviCRM issue since the SMTP response is the same whether or not the settings are valid. In the meantime, I will check to see what the host says -- thanks!

The host has done some testing and indicated that PHP's mail() should be working fine from the server end. Where do I begin to search for an issue within CiviCRM (I understand it's probably not a bug, but something particular to my installation)?

Go to yoursite.com/civicrm/admin/setting/smtp?reset=1 and choose mail()

Thanks, Herschel. I've tried that many times. The initial email was trying to communicate that no matter what options I select on that page, it gives me a message saying it worked, but no test messages come through and notifications of expiring memberships are not being sent. That's what I'm trying to troubleshoot.

Seems the only option then is to ask your host to troubleshoot. Or consider finding another host.
