How is the Fill option on import supposed to work for group membership?
June 20, 2011, 06:41:14 am
Hi,

We're using CiviMail to send newsletters on behalf of local chapters. The chapters provide us with a spreadsheet with contacts to add to their mailing list on a regular basis.

Here is the problem. Often these spreadsheets contain contacts that were imported before and have unsubscribed from the mailing list in the meantime. When we import the contacts and assign them to the mailing group, the contact that have unsubscribed will be resubscribed again, despite the fact that we use the Fill option for duplicate contacts.

1. I would suspect the contacts would be resubscribed only when the 'Update' option is used. Using the fill option should leave the subscription status untouched.

2. Is there a workaround to prevent that contacts will be resubscribed unintentionally on import.

Test your theory first with an import of just 4 or 5 rows using Fill and Update settings, the look up the 4 or 5 contacts and see the result.  If you are right (and I hope you are) there should be no problem with the Fill setting.
Try CiviTeacher: the online video tutorial CiviCRM learning library.
