Upgrade to 4.0.3 Problem

I am upgrading from Drupal 6 to 7.2 and Civi 3.2 to 4.0.3

Drupal upgrade seemed to go with no problem. I get no problems on the status

* I deleted all sites/all/modules/civicrm and replaced with new version
* I added the defines to the civicrm.settings.php file

When running the upgrade script mysite.com/?q=civicrm/upgrade&reset=1, I get a 500 Error with the following php error

PHP Fatal error:  Only variables can be passed by reference in <mysiteroot>\themes\garland\page.tpl.php on line 3I changed to a different drupal template and get
Code: [Select]
Fatal error:  Only variables can be passed by reference in <mysiteroot>\themes\bartik\templates\page.tpl.php on line 123
