3.4.x to 3.4.y upgrade question
June 24, 2011, 10:22:22 am
Just a quick question about upgrading within 3.4.

The wiki talks about uninstalling the component first then installing the new version. I've found this seems to change the site key in the settings files each time.

Can I just install the new package ontop without uninstall or is the uninstall important?

I have also changed the menu icon on the component menu to show a little civicrm logo instead of the standard comonent logo and this is lost each time too. It makes it easier for people to see the item in the list of components.

Would others like the standard logo to be a civicrm triangle as I'd be happy to add this (not sure where in terms of the install package).

Cheers,

Dave

This sounds useful. Can you figure out where the right place to put this is in the installer and please submit an issue with a patch for both J1.5 and J1.6 :)

Lobo,

I had already upgraded to 3.4.4 the other way when you posted.

I've now updated to 3.4.5 by just installing over the top (without an uninstall) everything looks good so far, interestingly my sitekey was changed in the upgrade process anyway, so this means you might as well uninstall and re-install.

Also, I take it the reason to uninstall is that if some files were removed from one release to the next if you don't uninstall these files might be left?

Cheers,

Dave

When you uninstall all civicrm files are deleted and recreated on install, hence sitekey was changed.

Hi Kurund,

But this time I tried not un-installing and just installing the new version and it still reset my site keys. Therefore it seems safest just to uninstall and re-install as stated.

Cheers,

Dave

I wanted to take advantage of the akeeba 'restore points' function which allows you to role-back updates to components if they don't work, but if you do the uninstall first this feature won't work. Could you confirm if a install over the top might leave removed files in place and that this is the reason for the prescribed uninstall?
