Email campaigns directed at elected officials
June 30, 2011, 02:55:54 pm
I know this has been brought up numerous times, but I couldn't find anything on where it stands.

Many organizations run online campaigns where a person comes to your site, fills out a form that includes their contact information and a sample email that they can edit. Based on their information, that email is then sent to their elected official (could be a state legislator or member of Congress, for instance). Their data is then saved in the database.

Where is CiviCRM in allowing this? I'm hearing from a number of people who want to move from their current proprietary database to CiviCRM, and this is their one remaining issue.

If it's not available, what are we looking at for implementation? Is it something relatively small that we could do a quick Make it Happen! campaign for it and raise the funds? I see this feature as probably the one thing that people on systems like Democracy in Action and Capwiz would need to be able to move to CiviCRM.

Thanks!

Well, it is too bad I couldn't ever get an answer on this. They're now going to another system, which has a considerable cost - money that could have been used instead to further expand CiviCRM.l

Hi,

That's not directly possible, but a simple hook on post in petition would allow it.

More generally and for what I've seen, people working for officials are IT savy enough to put a filter "if subject == you have to do xyz then flag it as spam and trash it".

Conceptually, sending loads of these mails is spam indeed, you're trying to sell them ideas instead of offering to increase the size of their dick (insert weiner joke here), but probably seen as annoying.

I personally think that it would be much more efficient to send a weekly dashboard "this week, X people signed, of these Y are from your constituency..." AND offer them a way to reply and make their support/opposition visible as part of the campaign. That's what we are trying to do on http://www.etownhall.eu
