CiviMail not sending mail - no idea why...
July 01, 2011, 05:02:28 pm
I send out bulk mail to different groups of members a few times a month.  The last time I did was on 6/16/11.  I tried sending one today using the "send immediately" option and nothing happens.

Since I haven't made any configuration changes since 6/16, and there are no obvious error messages popping up anywhere I can think to look, I've got no idea either why the mail is failing to be sent, or how to troubleshoot it.

Please help!  Any suggestions are welcome at this point because I am 110% baffled, and need to get this (and another) email out ASAP.

Thanks.

hi - maybe your cron has failed - and if so perhaps you would like to support the MIH to avoid such problems http://civicrm.org/civicrm/contribute/transact?reset=1&id=24

anyhow, quick way to test it to
a/ make sure the only emails that are in your queue are ones you are happy to send, if not, you need to 'reuse' and remove the original (i think)
b/ hit the url civicrm/mailing/queue&reset=1

this should fire off emails in the scheduled list

pete is right:

1. create a new test mailing to 2 or 3 people only ("email testing group" list, for instance)
2. try running the civimail.cronjob.php manually from a browser (make sure to include username, pass, key)
3. if it doesn't run, check the error message and try to correct it

it is also possible that your hosting provider has recently changed a configuration on your server.  if this is true, it should show up in either your PHP error logs (error_log) or in your CiviCRM log at (/sites/default/files/civicrm/templates_c/en_us/ConfigandLog/)

Try CiviTeacher: the online video tutorial CiviCRM learning library.

Thanks for both replies - I'll give it a shot just as soon as I can get my server up & running again...   ::)

I've got no idea what happened, but when I went to try pete's suggestion, my server stopped responding.  This could be related to why CiviMail / cron isn't working properly, but it is definitely not a Civi* problem.  Once I get the server up again, I'll see if CiviMail / cron is still having issues - if yes, I'll follow the instructions provided and report back.

Thanks again.

ETA - I don't know what caused the server to stop working, but after a reboot (and manual restart of SSL), it is back up - on to testing CiviMail...

So, I created a test group to which I could send a test mailing, then chose to "send immediately" - nothing was sent.

Entering <my_site>/civicrm/mailing/queue&reset=1 did trigger both my test email & the "production" email I've been trying to send since yesterday.

I've got another email to compose & send ASAP (should have been sent yesterday...).  I now know I can force it to be sent once it is ready, but how do I figure out what is preventing my cron from triggering the mailings as it always has in the past?

Thanks again for the help!

glad it helped - in terms of why - all i can suggest is that if everyone who hit problems with crons put a donation to the Make it Happen these problems would be reduced
