Volunteer management systems + CiviVolunteer
July 02, 2011, 10:15:47 am
Hi all,

I was just wondering if any of you knew of some quality volunteer management that are widely used.
One of the important features we need is time logging of volunteers, that is a volunteer can log there
hours by themselves.

I know CiviVolunteer addresses the issue in its initial specs but I have no idea what the progress of this
project is. Does anyone have an idea?

Thanks for your time.

Regards

No progress on CiviVolunteer as yet (and nothing in the near future either). CiviVolunteer will need at least a couple of organizations willing to drive it functionality and help with contributing or sponsoring the code for it to happen.

Not aware of any other projects that satisfy the volunteer niche. If you or your org can help make CiviVolunteer a reality that would be great

Thanks for the response.

How does one find organizations that have similar needs? Is there a place where I can post to see if there is much interest for this?

1. blog about your goals / needs and what you/your org are willing to do / contribute on your website

2. use the civi forums to post more details on your plans and needs

3. use twitter / facebook to spread the links among your peers

we do find that once folks build a base and plan it does attract other folks who are looking for something similar.

I have a client interested in tracking volunteer hours, as well as volunteer interests. I know they don't have the budget to contribute in a big way with civivolunteer right now, so I'm wondering what approaches other orgs have taken to tracking volunteer hours?

I saw a forum post from a few years ago that suggested using civicontribute with a special contribution type.  I'm thinking of using an activity record with a few custom fields.

The biggest challenge i see right now would be having on the fly reporting that tallies the number of volunteer hours contributed by a single volunteer, or by many volunteers.

one of the reasons this client wants to track volunteer hours is that some employers of their volunteers match hours with dollars, so being able to submit those hours records to the employer is worth money.

Using an activity record, they can certainly tally the hours up manually, and for this organization that will probably work in the short term (we're talking dozens of volunteers not thousands), but I'd love to see if we could implement in a way that helps explore this functionality and is perhaps slightly future proof.

I know, I know, code is king, cash is queen (or vice versa), this project has no budget for custom code.

I would focus on activities - if there isn't a canned report that will let you agregate by your custom field (unless there is a built in field for time) then it should be in an afternoon's work to write one.

I would think the data entry would be the issue. I've been looking at surveys as a way of providing speedy data entry for activities but there are performance issues with the form & I'm not sure whether I'll keep trying or not.
Make today the day you step up to support CiviCRM and all the amazing organisations that are using it to improve our world - http://civicrm.org/contribute

I work with small and growing nonprofits to help them increase donor engagement. My company also helps nonprofits build dynamic websites using Joomla. A need like CiviVolunteer is one that recurs with almost every group we work with. We would love to be part of a project to help it become a reality. I have several clients who I believe would be willing to test the program.

Would you and your clients be willing to sponsor development of features towards CiviVolunteer? Depending on the specs, i suspect this is a 50 to 200 hour project

This entire gig is less than 140 hours, so this client probably can't fund development of CiviVolunteer.  But I will certainly keep my eyes open for one that can.  Perhaps there is an institutional funder that would be interested?

Are you still looking to develop the volunteer management area? We might be interested in supporting this as well if we can have other folks on board. This seems like a big part missing from Civi:( We desperately need it.
