Dealing with contacts who should be in multiple types
July 06, 2011, 12:17:22 am
Hi everyone,
I'm building a CRM for study centres in Universities. The contact types are pretty clear - Student, Alumni, Staff. But it got murkier once I realised that some students are also staff, and some staff are also students. Students at one university may also be an alumni of a different one. There goes the clear definition between contact types.

The best way around this I can see so far is to make all contacts merely Individuals and create groups, assigning profiles to the group. Is there any downside to this and can anyone suggest alternate / better ways to handle this situation?

There was a Make It Happen to make 'multiple contact types' possible but may not be sorted before you needed - and yes, in the days before sub-types we did what you are suggesting with Groups or Tags - only downside is that therefore all fields for Individuals show for all Individuals, even if they are only relevant to Students.

That was my concern... however that is the lesser of the evils so I guess groups is the go.
