Ethical payment processors for non-profits?
July 07, 2011, 02:41:20 pm
Client recently asked if there was an alternative to PayPal given PayPal's blocking of wikileaks. I did a bit of googling and came up with https://donationpay.org/

Can't find any reference to them along with CiviCRM so thought I would post here in case any else might have interest in exploring this further.

Hi,

You are looking for an ethical financial institution? Good luck in your quest, you'll need it.

Joke aside, donationpay seems to be only for US.

@petednz, you'll have to define what 'ethical' is in your book ... Ethical as a company ? Ethical in terms of rates and sales conditions ?

For instance, PayPal has always been difficult to use in Belgium because of the potential delay of a few months in transferring the funds to your account in case of a (suspected) fraudulent use and blocking of your account. This can be an issue wrt. tax certificates ... so you'll need to take a look at payment processors AND card acquirers with respect to
* overall corporate / CSR values
* pricing model adapted to non-profits (lower rates)
* compatibility of the funds transfer model with fax certificate legislation in the applicable regions
* issues pertaining to privacy
* issues related to security (strength of protection, flexibility to exclude certain IP ranges known to generate most of the fraudulent purchases, ...)

I can't vouch for ethics, but from a technology standpoint, 2CheckOut is a good replacement for PayPal. They have international service and work "off-site" like PayPal can. There is no integration yet for CiviCRM, but anyhow, they are a fairly popular service.

Pete,

I'm aware a long time has passed since you started this thread. However, in case you haven't heard of them, we are using an Auckland company called SwipeHQ as a payment processor in NZ, who have exceptional rates for charities like us @ just 0. 95% and with no monthly or minimum fees. Not sure about non-profits that aren't registered charities.

Note we aren't on CiviCRM yet, so not sure how nicely it plays in that context. So someone would need to develop an integration solution, but they do already have ubercart support (I think). They also have iOS/Android phone/tablet apps, and heaps of other ways to use their services (including support for Mail Order / Telephone Order processing).

We have been using them for nearly a year, and they are pretty responsive to development suggestions. Had no issues with getting our money regular as clockwork from them into our bank account.

Just don't use their international conversion rates, as they are terrible! Bill only in NZ$ and let the card pick up the conversion if needed.

Mike

Mike - welcome - and thanks very much for that local input, and the warning about international amounts - I will find out more.

It is part of a credit union. I am not sure if they have any other ethical basis.
