date format for Joomla 1.6

What are appropriate date formats to hand to joomla 1.6. I'm trying to rewrite a 1.5 mod (mod_civievent) for 1.6. I have a field in the xml file called dateformat. It hands %Y-%m-%d to Joomla, which gives an error like this.
