Problem with multiple registrants

I am using CiviCRM 3.31 (all that was available when we launched registration for our event). An individual registered for multiple people and when I ran the participant report, the individual registering the multiple participant's name was appearing twice in the list. I updated the contact record to update the name and it appears to have merged the records into one contact record with 2 events instead of 2 contacts records, each with registration for a single event.

I don't see any way to correct that. Any help would be appreciated.
