Error: MySQL has gone away while importing contacts from csv
July 11, 2011, 08:57:41 am
Hey,

Drupal 7 & CiviCRM 4.0.4

I wanted to repost this so that others could find it easily and to reiterate the fix that worked for me (and others).

While importing contacts from a csv file (more than 17,000 lines), I was getting the "MySQL has gone away" error.  I tried breaking the file up into smaller chunks, but even 1,000 lines caused the same error.

There's a global wait_timeout variable in the my.cnf (which is a file the users on a shared server do not always have access to).  This server had the wait_timeout set to 10 seconds.  When the hosting company changed it to 900 seconds, I was able to upload files of up to 2,000 lines without a problem.  I tried 3,000 once as a test, and the server timed out.  You may have different results.

Regards, kmitz
