ACL setup requires related changes in Drupal roles as well?
July 17, 2011, 10:45:02 pm
I am attempting to configure CiviCRM 4.0.4 / Drupal 7.4 to allow certain contacts to have CRUD permissions for other specific contacts. The process as I understand it seems to be more complicated than I expected. Here is what I have attempted so far:
  • In Drupal, create an 'editor' role with 'create/read/update/delete contacts' permissions as well as the 'access CiviCRM' permission
  • In CiviCRM create an 'editor' role and apply it to the 'editor' group
  • in CiviCRM, allow edit operation for this 'editor' role on another group which contains users who will be edited
  • In Drupal, assign the 'editor' role to the specific users who are in the CiviCRM 'editor' group
The last step, while necessary, seems to be worse than a duplication of work as there is no drupal 'editor' group. I have already created an 'editor' role in CiviCRM that I have applied to the CiviCRM 'editor' group, and if I understand the required process clearly I must then: 1) create a drupal 'editor' role meant for the exact same purpose and 2) I must know who is a member of the related CiviCRM 'editor' group so that I can apply the new drupal 'editor' role to them individually. I also must remember to keep both locations up to date so that when any change to the membership of the civicrm 'editor' group occurs I must also make the related change in drupal.

It's very likely I'm confused regarding this process since I have never used CiviCRM to this extent. Thanks for any clarification!
