ZIP error with Joomla 1.6 and CiviCRM 4.0.1 alt version

Hi,

I am trying to install CiviCRM on one of my Joomla site. The site is built up on Joomla 1.6 and I am trying to install CiviCRM 4.0.1. I have downloaded the package 'civicrm-4.0.1-joomla-alt.zip' as I don't have the zip functinality in PHP. I have uploaded the extracted files to tmp folder in Joomla and have given the path. But it is still showing the error with the ZIP functionality.that is

"Your PHP version is missing zip functionality. Please ask your system administrator / hosting provider to recompile PHP with zip support.

If this is a new install, you will need to uninstall CiviCRM from the Joomla Extension Manager."

But I have unzipped all the things and I cannot find any zip files inside the directories. Please help me to install the CRM.

In extension to the above post we have made sure our php.ini is configured correctly, tried every version from 4.0.x both normal and alt. unzip the files and uploaded them to temp then attempted to install. we are getting the same install error. Any help would be appreciated. our server meets all the requirements as well.

I hate to bump this up but we are having an issue with getting Civicrm to install. We have been working around the clock to finding a solution to get it to install but have yet to come up with one. We appreciate your time in this project it is an amazing program and that is why we chose it to use on one of our customers websites. But we continue to run into the error of

We have search all over the web hoping some one would have a solid solution but nothing seams to work. we can install 3.4.x on another site on the same server with no problem. but we cannot get the 4.x.x to install on 1.6.

Can you add debug code to the install stuff and see what is happening and why. that might be the easiest way out since we've not hit this error

We have solved the issue with the install for 1.6 and civicrm. the installation was not completing all the way. leaving some entry's in the db to be left out as well as a few other changes to the admin end of joomla. We had to end up reinstalling joomla again from scratch and then try to get  civicrm to install and it did half way but like mentioned it took a lot of manual steps to get the install finished.

Any chance of documenting those manual steps?  I've had a dog of a time with CiviCRM installs under Joomla and I;m not sure that I have a 100% complete installation.
