[SOLVED] civicrm will not install on Joomla 1.7
July 19, 2011, 04:31:07 pm
I have tried it on two different sites, and civicrm will not install on Joomla 1.7.  At least using the normal zip upload process through Joomla.  I am sure this should be apparent by now, and hope I have missed something.

This post has had 16 views, and no replies.  I hope everyone understands that many of us install their Joomla packages through our web hosting providers.

Inasmuch, they insist that security updates are done routinely, including ( Ian pretty sure) the Joomla 1.7 upgrade.  If we do not follow these policies, they actually shut our sites down as a security risk.

This puts us in a unique position when civicrm (or other software) is not compatible with the newest versions of Joomla.  We get caught between a rock and hard place.

I worked very hard to convince our non-profit disaster center to use civicrm, they only wanted to use a Microsoft database they were used to.  The learning curve for civicrm was hugh.  But, I convinced them that civicrm is the total solution.

I cannot emphasize how much I appreciate that hard work put in to civicrm and the fact that it is free.  It is overwhelming that there is a community out there that is so generous and selfless.

The sad fact though is that I cannot in all good faith promote this product if I cannot be sure that the software it is designed for will work properly with it.

If I am off base, or missing some obvious solution, it is with great apologies, but former posts seem to indicate that the civicrm team is in a waiting game to build compatibility with Joomla 1.7.

Thanks for your understanding I hope this brings a new light to the situation.

I'm pretty sure that J! 1.7 compatibility will be part of CiviCRM v4.1

It is not a waiting game, it is just a matter of resources and priorities :)

If 1.7 compatibility is important to you, then please take the next step and see what needs to be done to make Civi compatible with J! 1.7

i just installed CiviCRM 4.0.4 on Joomla 1.7 with absolutely no problems.

i note in the first post you mentioned that you tried installing through the "normal upload process in Joomla"

CiviCRM has never been installable through the upload & install method because the package is too large -- that was true in J1.0, J1.5, J1.6, and will be true in J1.7. please read the installation guide here: http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC40/Joomla+Installation+Guide+for+CiviCRM+4.0

piggybacking on lobo's comment --
note that CiviCRM does not yet profess to be compatible with J1.7. given that 1.7 went stable *today*, and that CiviCRM -- like most Joomla extensions -- are not necessarily in a position to ensure 100% compatibility with a new CMS version on day 1 -- don't you think it's a bit extreme to label the software as "unpromotable". i'm curious if you have the same sentiment toward the other 7,600 extensions listed on the JED that are not flagged as 1.7 compatible today.

that being said, I took a clean install of J1.7+C4.0.x for a quick test run, and it doesn't appear as though there are any problems. Joomla has made much noise about the one-click upgrades to 1.7 -- and the system works great. and developer docs published by the Joomla core team all indicate that most extensions will need to do very little -- if anything -- to ensure compatibility with 1.7. but that doesn't mean you can just assume all extensions will immediately be fully compatible on the first day of a major version release.

I just installed CiviCRM 4.0.4 on a fresh Joomla 1.7.0 with no problems. What I do is manually unzip the CiviCRM archive into the tmp folder in Joomla and then the install works the exact same as for Joomla 1.6 and 1.5.

I see I raised somewhat of a firestorm, but the result is good feedback.  I did not intend to offend any one and apologize that I did.

It looks as if there are install options, so I will try them.  The bottom line is my extreme appreciation for the CiviCRM software and team.  I must not have been clear on that in my previous post.

Keep smiling...   8)

Hershel, and all others, thank you.  I tried Hershel's method and it worked fine.  I am getting familiar with the program now.

I don't see a "Problem Solved" button, but this one is!!
