bounce handling "tweaks"
July 20, 2011, 06:43:41 am
hi,
in doing some testing of civimail, i stumbled upon the following, which would seem to me to be an issue that i hope can be addressed:

i did two test mailings to see if bounces were being handled correctly.

in the first mailing, i supplied a bogus email address with a valid domain. for example: noemaiforme@verizon.net.
in the second mailing, i supplied a valid email address with a invalid domain. for example: ctarascio@verizonx.net.

the report for the first mailing bounced noemaiforme@verizon.net.
the report for the second mailing indicated that the email to ctarascio@verizonx.net was successfully delivered.

i think that both of these email addresses should have bounced. can someone let me know what might be going on here and if this is something that can be fixed?

also, i am not exactly sure that this is a SMTP service issue as opposed to an issue with civimail, so i am sorry if i posted this in the wrong area of the forum.

any help appreciated.

thanks,
cynthia

Bounces are detected only if the remote server sends a message. Try sending an email yourself, from your regular email, to ctarascio@verizonx.net  and see if it bounces or not...

hi hershel,
thanks for responding.

i did as you suggested and sent an email from my outlook client to ctarascio@verizonx.net. as you suspected, it did not bounce but i spoke with our email guy and he said that the email was "sitting" in the exchange queue and that after 24-72 hours i would probably get an email from the server telling me that it couldn't be delivered.

i realize now that handling invalid domains is very different than handling invalid email addresses with valid domains, so i guess that it is not possible to treat the former as bounces. still... i don't understand why they are included in the "successful deliver" stats in the civimail report.

thanks hershel,
cynthia
