CAPTCHA Gives Bad Error Message

On Drupal 7 CiviCRM 4.0.4 site, on a membership contribution page, we have a CAPTCHA. I fill out the page, select " I will send payment by check " and complete the process.

When I click Continue on the next page, I go to the Drupal home page and see a message:

The answer you entered for the CAPTCHA was not correct.

My answer was correct, of course. :)

Quite odd. Any ideas?
