Help Understanding Smart Group Behaviors
August 04, 2011, 01:08:31 pm
Hey Folks

I attended a User/Admin training and I believe I understand Smart Groups but wanted to run a couple case scenarios past you smart folks to see if I have things right.

FIRST CASE SCENARIO
2 of my smart groups were created from custom search 'aggregate contributions totals'.  Previous Donors totals = 1-$1499 and Major Donor totals = $1500+ each with a starting date range but NO END DATE.

So, if/when a Previous Donor donates again and takes their aggregate contribution total ABOVE 1500 - will the first smart group remove the group member and the second smart group add?

SECOND CASE SCENARIO
I have created separate smart groups for every state that held a Previous Donor.  If a donor moves from Georgia to Florida, and their contact information is changed, will they be removed from the Previous Donor - Georgia group and added to the Previous Donor - Florida group?

Your assistance in verifying or correcting my way of thinking greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!
Keith Jarvis

Hi - if you think of Smart Groups as 'recorded searches' it may help you get familiar with the funcationality. Basically a Smart Group is recording the 'criteria' applied to find certain contacts - but also allows for specific contacts to be added/removed on a case by case basis.
So if you Smart Group is 'people aged 12' then people will be moving in and out of the 'group' as time proceeds.
