This was previously mentioned in http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php?topic=20873, new topic started at request of Lobo in http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-8572. I've reproduced the issue on the demo server.

The issue is, when one creates an Event in which a single contact can have multiple Participant records for the same event, if one performs the custom search called "Price Set Details for Event Participants/Price Set Export", the resulting screen display lists the number of contacts found, which is less than the number of participant records one is expecting. I suppose this is, in fact, technically correct -- it IS the number of Contacts -- but I would expect that the number reported at the top of the table should be the number of rows in the displayed table, which would be the number of Participants, not Contacts.

To see an example (1 contact, 2 participants), do a Price Set Export search here

Certainly livable-with, once one realizes what is going on, but it would be nice if the displayed number matched the number of rows.

I think the current functionality of the"Price Set Details for Event Participants/Price Set Export" is correct. It matches with the existing functionality when "Allow multiple registrations from the same email address?" is selected.

Real-life example of why it is correct: We are running a conference with 4 time slots where people have to choose between 8 concurrent sessions. We are also offering an optional pre-conference workshop (choice of 3) plus an optional conference dinner with/without transport to teh dinner venue.

People change their minds about which options they want to attend after they have paid, so we cancel their registration and re-register them with the new options (making use of the (fairly) newly available admin-only price field to apply their payment as a credit so that they only receive a receipt for the extra they have paid. - great addition - thanks to all those involved)

We only want each contact appearing once in the "Price Set Details for Event Participants/Price Set Export" with their current session selections. We paste the export into an excel template and hence can get the current totals for all the options that are available. (Is there an easier way to do this? I haven't found it yet. It would be great to have a report that would give a summary of the actual price option counts for a specified event)

Again I think the functionality you want is specific to how you use the events module. It may not suit the majority of event users, but then again it might (for newcomers to this thread see discussion on functionalilty of "Allow multiple registrations from the same email address?"at http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,21048.0.html.)
