"Allow multiple registrations from the same email address" is ignored
August 08, 2011, 02:31:13 pm
This was an issue with CiviCRM 3.3, which could be fixed by the patch described in Reply #18 of http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,17248.15.html .

It's still an issue in CiviCRM 3.4.x. I've reproduced it on the demo server. This event,
http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/event/manage/eventInfo?reset=1&action=update&id=7
has the "allow multiple registrations from the same email address checked" and there is an existing registration for the demo@example.com user. If you sign in as user demo and try to do an online registration, you'll get the "oops, you've already registered" page, ergo ignoring the value of the checkbox.

The same patch works for 3.4.4 (our current version, though it's at a different line number from 3.3), so it presumably just needs to get applied to the main line.

The patch you refer to is an optional patch that people can apply if they want the functionalilty of one person registering under, say, demo@example.com and someone else coming along later and also registering using demo@example.com.  It was not a patch to fix a 'bug', and so hasn't been incorproated into 3.4.

As Lobo said in reply 13 from the earlier issue you refer to :

Quote
the "Allow multiple registrations from the same email address?" was designed for the one person registering multiple people via the same registration form

A real-life example of this: We are running a conference aimed at midwives/lactation consultants.  Many of our potential participants are employed in hospitals.  A hospital may decide to register and pay for 3 or 4 of their staff and the person responsible for staff development registers everyone using the one email address, because they need all receipts to come to them so that they can adequately report to the accounts section.

We definitely don't want the functionality you want and I imagine a lot of other people running events don't want it either.

Since switching to civiCRM the number of duplicate registration we receive from people who have forgotten they have already registered has dropped dramatically.

We also wouldn't want the second registrant to be able to overwrite the contact details for the first registrant which could happen if the duplicate rules were not set carefully enough.

There may be a case to change the functionality enabled when "Allow multiple registrations from the same email address?" is ticked, but I think that would need to be canvassed widely amongst the CiviCRM community.   5 or 6 peole have indicated via two issues that they want the functionality to change, but there could be hundreds out there like me, who are happy with it as it is and so have not bothered to comment.

Hi Jchester, the quote you quoted describes exactly what we're doing. One person registers multiple others.

But we can just keep patching then. Thanks for explaining.

Lobo's quote "one person registering multiple people via the same registration form" means "one person registering multiple people via the same registration form at the same time"  Italics are my addition, to clarify the situation.

I think I understand now. The "allow multiple from same email" checkbox is only intended to be meaningful when used in conjunction with "register multiple participants at the same time" checkbox. So, if one checks only the "allow multiple from same email", that's not a supported usage of those two checkboxes; but we are free to apply the optional patch to support that use case. Is that right?

Sorry for my misunderstanding.

I am very happy to see that this use case is now supported in 4.2.6 (and hopefully, forever!). Many thanks to the CiviCRM team.
