Is CiviCRM a best fit for member article paywall?
August 09, 2011, 06:05:37 pm
Hi:

I am exploring using CiviCRM with Drupal 7 for a US 501(c)(4) organization.

They will have articles on their website.  But many articles will be restricted to members who sign up and donate first.  Access to restricted articles will be their reward for donating.

Would this be a good fit for CiviCRM?  Note that I would want CiviCRM to handle:
-  member signups
-  member donations at the time of signup, or later (or at least be aware of donations)

Then, back in Drupal, I would want certain nodes (articles, pages, etc.) to be visible only to those who signed up.

Would CiviCRM be a good fit?

How much custom effort/programming would be involved, if any?

Thanks very much for your advice.

Fred

Hi Fred - you can synch Drupal roles either from Membership Status or from a Group so either might achieve what you need - not too sure about the status of Smart Groups and synching so you would need to check on that

Not much programming involved

Thanks very much for your responses so far.  Being completely new to CiviCRM, I would like to ask about paid membership processing.

Does CiviCRM include a paid membership signup mechanism?  Does it support credit card processing gateways?

For example, we could establish a merchant account at ClickandPledge.com, InternetSecure.com, or use Paypal's gateway.  Would the payment / donation mechanism be completely separate from CiviCRM, or would it be fully integrated?

I read that CiviCRM includes a module to interface with Ubercart.  So for a basic membership payment site, would Ubercart be required in addition to CiviCRM?

Thanks very much for your help.

Fredo - yes you can charge for Memberships- there are various payment processors already set up to work with civicrm. No Ubercart is not required.

I think it would be worth your while perusing the online book http://en.flossmanuals.net/CiviCRM/ to answer some of these basic questions.
