Contact database
August 11, 2011, 08:52:39 am
Hi all. The small business I work for maintains a large contact database of around 1000 journalists. They each have multiple phone numbers and email address and most importantly move around a lot, from country to county and city to city.
At the moment we manage this through a large word document (I know!) which is updated every time we find out that someone has moved to somewhere else. This is a far from ideal solution, and I am trying to migrate us to a cloud based solution so that we can access the contact list from anywhere.
It needs to be quick and easy to update, and importantly it needs to be very easily searchable by country/place. If possible this would all be done via a web frontend accessible when we are logged in.
I'm having trouble finding something to fit our needs and stumbled upon CiviCRM. It seems to be similar to what we need, but maybe a bit too complex. Any ideas if this is a good fit or not?

Sounds to me like CiviCRM is a perfect fit actually.

We're building a solution like this at the moment! Try out the dashboards feature - you can have canned reports sitting in each person's dashboard showing contacts by country, state, province, ...

Yes, CiviCRM has a LOT of extra features and modules that you don't require if you are just looking for a contact manager... but you can turn those off to simplify the task of administering the system.

Thanks for the replies. I've looked into it more and it does look like CiviCRM would be ideal. Unfortunately my testing host (lunarpages) doesn't support the required specs. So will have to think if it'd be worth switching hosts or not.

You might look at CiviHosting - see Hershel's footer higher up the thread. It's well priced & I think Civi is pre-installed
