Using Import to Bulk Change Primary Phone Number
August 19, 2011, 07:21:13 am
I have several hundred contacts (including their Internal ID) for whom I need to change their Primary phone from 'Home - Landline' to 'Home - Mobile'.

I couldn't find a way to do this via import - just wondering if I'm missing something here?

All the numbers in 'Home - Landline' are long since disconnected or not in service so if there was a way to accomplish this by bulk deleting those values that would also be acceptable.

Thoughts?

I do not know if you can do this via an import, but an experienced CiviCRM developer could do this directly in the database for you. Either via SQL or the API.

Ran into this issue myself today.

Actually, the import tool can be used to 'fix' primary vs. not primary addresses and phones.

Key point: The import tool marks as primary the first address or phone that is imported, that is to say the column farthest on the left.

Step 1:  export contacts in question with fields you want to switch,  i.e. home address vs office address or home fax vs home phone, along with Internal Contact Id

Step 2: re-arrange the columns, placing what you want to be primary on the left

Step 3: re-import the file using the "update" setting and matching on Internal Contact Id

A post describes this technique in further detail here:
