Calculating donations per user relative to membership dates
August 19, 2011, 06:43:03 pm
It is relatively easy to search for contacts that have donated over and above a certain amount in a given calendar year (or any arbitrary period between two dates), but it does not seem possible to search for donations within the past 12 months, or even more specifically and potentially useful: members who have given a certain amount cumulatively in their current membership year.

Here is the use case: membership costs a minimum of $50.  Special benefits are conferred to members who donate more than $500 in their membership year, perhaps in multiple donations in response to various appeals or events (rather than someone who makes a $500 donation to become a member).

It is possible to create a report that searches by a relative time period (this year, month, quarter, etc...) but not to search using the search mechanism by these same relative date criteria (unless I am missing something)

there is an MIH for the above feature here:

Unfortunately its not gotten a lot of traction :(

Thanks for the link Lobo, but based on that description it doesn't satisfy my requirement which a relative date filter that is relative to the user's membership year.

If the membership year is not a calendar year, and the org wants to reward people who have given more than 500 in their membership year, a relative date to calendar year, or last 12 months wouldn't work. in the calendar year, i could have made my membership donation in the last calendar year (2010), and thus would not be counted. Or I could have made renewed my membership 6 months ago and have given money 8 months ago at a fundraiser, then my membership dues, and then another donation, all i would want to count is the membership dues and the subsequent donation.

does that make sense?

I guess what I am advocating for is a 3rd relative date filter: relative to membership start date
