Update existing info in multiselect field with extra info from import
September 05, 2011, 04:41:38 am
Hi, maybe I've been searching for the answer to this using the wrong terms but this is what I'm trying to do:
I'm importing CSV data and everything works except I have multiple records where the same organisation is listed but one field has new info. I've setup a multiselect field with all the possible values for the field but when I import, this field is overwritten with the latest value. Instead I would like it to update the field and add the new value while keeping the existing values.

I've tried selecting the Update and Fill options. I've tried changing the type of multiselect field the data is being imported into. Nothing has worked so far.

I've read that to import multiple values they should all be in one field and separated with a comma. But this is not possible when importing new information at a later date.

Hope someone can help.

I think the current route would need to be something like
- if you can't find the contacts in civicrm then import the contacts that need updating but without the new multiselect data - add them to a tag/group
- then export them with the old data
- concatenate the data in a spreadsheet with comma separation
- reimport

I have no idea what is involved in updating import to be able to do this, probably requires creating temp table or some such - am sure the community would appreciate it if you have the coding ability to contribute something along those lines - in which case prob best to ask on IRC
