Current and Upcoming Events question

What's considered a "current and upcoming event" in order to appear in the "Current and Upcoming Events" listing?  I have an event coming up on Oct. 18 that's not showing in the list, but past events show up unless I disable them.  I know I can use a filter to control what shows up in the list of events to be managed, but I'm still unclear on how to control what displays to the general public.

Replying to myself:  I figured out the problem.  I didn't have "public event" checked in the Info and Settings page of the event.
