What version of PayPal, PHP and Civi are compatible?
January 29, 2008, 05:39:04 am
I'm trying to get PayPal to work with a multi-site which has PHP 5.2.5 installed.
There are several versions of PayPal and (apparently) they each have different APIs. Here is the list from the PayPal Merchant Site (https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_profile-comparison ).  Here is the US list:
•   Website Payments Standard
•   Website Payments Pro
•   Express Checkout
•   Payflow Link
•   Payflow Pro
Here is the primary install page for paypal:

Our organization is currently using PayFlow Gateway (VERY CHEAP $0.10 fixed transaction fee.).  I have not seen any support for this (although its quite popular - https://www.paypal.com/en_US/html/SolutionsDirectory/sd_pf-compatible.html .
We also have custom fields that need to be supported.
Can someone please validate the following table?  Can all 3 be supported?

Package                               CiviCRM 1.9               Works with PHP 5.2.5      Supports Custom Fields
Website Payments Standard   Yes                              Yes                                      No
Website Payments Pro              Yes                                  No                                 Yes
Express Checkout                Yes                            Yes                                    No
Payflow Link                            No                                NA                                        NA
Payflow Pro                            No                                NA                                        NA

Regarding the chart - support for custom fields differs by which type of record the custom field is used for. As far as I know, custom fields used for the Contact record are supported by all 3 implemented versions of PayPal (Pro, Express, Standard)... and I'm pretty sure custom fields used to extend the Contribution record are also supported as of 1.9.

Support for custom fields used for Membership and Participant records has been "fixed" for PayPal Std as of 2.0 (http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-2007).

Regarding Payflow Link / Payflow Pro - the payment processor architecture is "pluggable" and several people / orgs have stepped up and contributed additional plugins (Moneris, Authorize.net, PayJunction, IATS).

PayPal Pro seems to be working nicely under PHP 5.2.4 / 5.2.5 in 2.0.

Thanks David - appreciate your quick response!

Do you or anybody know if there are there any patches or workarounds for the PayPal Pro / PHP 5.2.5 issue or custom fields for participant issue in CiviCRM 1.9?

I'm concerned because we cannot wait until the 2.0 GA and do not want to risk running on a beta / alpha.

Would appreciate any guidance / suggestions.

just got a response from PayPal tech support:

I'm currently running PHP V. 5.2.5 and I have implemented all the NVP and soup examples in our page with no problems. I can confirm that the information on that page is only a rumor.

This issues is very illusive  ???

If anyone has some wisdom here, i'd apreciate it.  I'm sort of stuck with PHP 5.2.5 + CiviCRM v1.9 + PayPal.

Thanks - I know civi 2.0 is a push.
