SMTP settings aren't being saved

I had this posted in the wrong forum. I am trying to set up outgoing mail.

I am using Drupal 6.22 and CiviCRM 3.4.5

I can set up either sendmail or smtp and send a test mail from the outgoing mail setup page. I get a message that the email was sent and the email is received saying that the settings are valid.

At the same time I get the following errors:
    "warning: array_key_exists() [function.array-key-exists]: The second argument should be either an array or an object in /home/durhamcl/public_html/sites/all/modules/civicrm/CRM/Core/BAO/Setting.php on line 175."
This line is repeated 9 times followed by:
        "warning: array_merge() [function.array-merge]: Argument #2 is not an array in /home/durhamcl/public_html/sites/all/modules/civicrm/CRM/Core/BAO/Setting.php on line 179."

 (I wondered if this was linked to the theme I was using (Wilderness) but I get the same errors in Garland.)

Anyway, when I then do anything which uses outgoing mail I get the message "Sorry. A non-recoverable error has occurred. There is no valid smtp server setting. Click Administer CiviCRM >> Global Settings to set the SMTP Server."

When I go to the setup page again all my settings are blank.

I haven't had much need for mail up to now but I know that I've been having this problem for some time and recently went to a new host with more firepower and a friendlier attitude to Civicrm but the problem persists.

I applied the patch but still get the same error messages and settings disappear.
