Create discussion list from group?

Is there any functionality in CiviCRM that can create an email discussion list from a contact group?  Right now I use a Google Group (which is a real drag!), I'm thinking of switching to a MailMan group, but even better would be to have something directly controlled by CiviCRM since that's what defines membership in the group that needs to chat.

Nope. THere have been some attempts to integrate Mailman with Civi Groups but not sure anything has been contributed back to the community yet - will ping the guys i know did some work and see what might happen.
Another option you can look at, that others have used, is Drupal Organic Groups tied in to Civi Groups.

As petednz said, you could probably achieve this based on OG in Drupal. See this also http://drupal.org/project/mail2og (only for Drupal 6 as of now)
