Can anyone point me to an example where subtotals are put on a report?

Check "Donor Report (Summary)" - http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/report/instance/6?reset=1, where subtotals are shown per year.

File is - CRM/Report/Form/Contribute/Summary.php, check group by with rollup clause.
