Recurring events as a Make it Happen?
September 24, 2011, 05:46:28 am
In attending Civicon and searching the forums it seems that core Civi functionality for recording and reporting easily on attendance at recurring events might be of interest to many organisations which, like ours, run courses over a number of weeks rather than as one-off events.  One post seemed to suggest that this functionality may make it into a later version anyway (4.2).  Is that the case?  If not, I'd be interested in having an idea of the time/cost of this project so that we can see if it might have some Make It Happen possibilities/interest.

Please can you let me know what it might cost.  Thanks.  And if anyone else is interested, please say!  In a post on 29/9/09 lobo wrote, "I think there are lots of orgs who want it but very few (none?) willing to step up and either pay for it or develop it."  It'd be great if lots of us can collaborate to make this happen.

PS If this isn't the right part of the forum to mention this, please tell me.

hey lindsey:

i think before anyone can price it, they'll need a lot more details on the functionality desired. There are two big pieces you mention in the post: recurring event AND attendance sheet.

One way to get more attention on this would be to write a detailed blog post which serves as a specification / feature set for what the MIH will seek to accomplish. If you create an account on civicrm.org, i can give u blogging privileges there

I would be interested in something like this too.  What I would like to see: In CiviEvent, be able to create a program/course that runs for some number of weeks/months.    The same set of students participate every Mon and Wed, each week. ( The exact schedule of when people meet should be configurable, and ideally show up on the calendar)

What the instructor should be able to do: Mark who attended each Monday and each Wednesday.  Another idea: The instructor should be able to record grades or other indications/notes about the progress of each student in a particular course.

Thanks lobo.  I've registered so do let me know when I have the right permission to blog.  I have an organisational case-study feel for basic functionality concerning recurring events/attendance reporting but, having just been using Civi for 3 months, I know that others with more experience will have far more formed thoughts on functionality that could benefit different types of organisations.

Is it acceptable for me to blog as a case-study-based discussion starter on this to draw functionality suggestions from other quarters or would you prefer me to do some more research before blogging?  And is it possible for me to check the blog with a Civi person before posting it?!

hey lindsey:

u can now blog here: http://civicrm.org/blogs/lindseym

you can blog it as a case study based discussion and see the suggestions you get. It also helps to give people a few specific on what you are looking for / your goals with this feature(s). You should go ahead and publish it when done, we'll read it along with the rest of the community

I have an interest in something like this being developed. At Cat Haven where I volunteer we have been introducing CiviCRM over the last 6 months and use the now unsupported Drupal module CiviEvent Repeat. We find it works quite well but after trying out CiviCRM 4 and seeing how it better ties into Drupal we are keen to upgrade.
An article headed "Future Make It Happen Candidates" on the civicrm wiki site lists recurring events as a possible project so there is obviously interest in this option.
Let's hope we can get something happening.

Hi lobo
I've just blogged about recurring events at http://civicrm.org/blogs/lindseym/recurring-events-and-attendance-reporting-core-civi-functions  I hope it's in the right place - do let me know if not!
