California code sprint - 18-20 October 2011

Hey there,

Discuss ideas for the California code sprint here!

I have an idea for an approach to resources that i'd like to work on: http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,21577.0/topicseen.html

I have to say API Documentation.  I brought the issue up before London... there seem to be larger issues than actually writing the documentation.

As the self-designated noob/user/mortal/moron/bag-o'-hammers of the sprint, I'm also interested in a) getting an explanation of how the reporting system works and b) writing a manual for the advanced user to create custom reports.

If I get feature requests:
Groups and Tags in reports - we have a need to run reports on user-created tags and groups, both as filters and for grouping
SMS - some stuff is there... looks  like it could be fleshed out
Exposing Civi Events to the CMS, allowing CMS modules to take actions based on Civi hooks

And special requests:
Peet's Coffee...or equivalent.

A few things which are on our list AND do not require strong coding skills

1. Changes to admin menu: A bit of sql for new and upgrade users

2. template issue of putting register link to top of info form on event page

3. Convert more bin scripts to new cron format

4. Add 4.1 docs and webtests

* Membership price sets
* Recurring contributions in google and auth
* New PCP code
* New Social networking stuff (including template structure and modularization for email that is sent)
* On behalf profile
* Contact reference
* Settings and override
* Consolidated Cron

5. Investigate sector specific brochure like HR work

6. Marketing

* US version of spread the word
* more stats mining from stuff we collect
* reformat spread the word page

Things to do before sprint:

* get webtest running on 4.1
* work on making it super easy for someone to get wettest running
* work on a few more cron scripts
* move HR brochure to the next level where we can do other sectors

Let's add to that list, finish Wordpress integration and try test install on a Wordpress site with an eye out for:
1. Wordpress user -> CiviCRM contact linking and updating
2. Wordpress roles -> CiviCRM permissions setup
3. Wordpress plugin -> CiviCRM in the menus, acting like a proper WP plugin

If anyone at the sprint is interested in Memberships, there a 4.1 issue that could use some "love" at the sprint:
http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-8547

The "problem" to be addressed is that there is "renew now" link on the Contact Dashboard for memberships that were originally entered by back-office staff (also a problem for "free" memberships - but no idea how often free memberships are used).

The proposed solution is to store a "default online contribution page" for each membership type. We've got a good idea of implementation steps / specs - just need a motivated coder :-)

In response to Mason's suggestion - I did revive the original discussion thread with some updates - hopefully just in time for you to take it to the next level :-)

Happy to try to catch up on IRC prior / during if you want some more on the thinking behind it all at the moment.

Here's a list of challenges shared by Eliet Henderson from SF Baykeeper at our last meetup. Baykeeper migrated to Civi from Raiser's Edge - so there are things they used to have, but missing in Civi. Eliet is joining the sprint on Wednesday for 1 day. Would be great if we can knock of one or more :-)

----------
* Can’t run report showing contribution data for both donors and non‐donors

• Need better search builder functionality to exclude factors and more easily choose multiple factors

• Searches and reports don’t include First Gift and Last Gift data
– Also want to be able to display this info to donors on a contribution page, and customize gift strings

* Want event registration systems that allows someone to RSVP that they are not attending (and possibly want to make a gift).

• Want to soft credit a gift to more than one person

• Want to set up automatic soft credits between two contacts

• Limited token data available in email receipts (want to add soft credit and PCP information).
