Date choice not working in custom fields?

I have set up a custom field in our system choosing Date and specifying M YYYY (ie Dec 2009 as the way it should show in the field).  When I use the field it demands that I choose a day in the month and shows the date as month/date/year (eg September 8th, 2011) despite the fact that I have specified just month and year in the custom field set up. 

I have tested it on the Demo site as Date Test (custom field set) and Date Test Field (custom field) and the same is happening.  Is this a bug that needs fixing?

This is a bug in 3.4.x/4.0.x

Someone has filed it along with a patch which i recently applied to 4.1. In general we are not very good at dealing with incomplete dates (IMO)

Thanks for the speedy reply.  We'll live with it!  If I leave the field set up as M YYYY in 4.0.3, presumably when we upgrade to 4.1 it will right itself anyway from then onwards.
