dates prior to 1900

Having a problem with dates prior to 1900: they're defaulting to 1970/01/01. It's not UNIX because anything between 1970 and 1900 is fine, so I think there's a php setting somewhere: the issue doesn't recreate on the demo site.

Dates can be entered direct onto the database and display fine in civi, but if you edit it switches to 1970-01-01 and won't change.

Does anybody know what I have to fiddle with to make them work?

Hmmm I have had a similar issues with the Dutch dates (any date in March, May or October showed up as 1970/1/1), and in the end I made sure that the 'M' format was never used....even if the issue is different you might have a play there and see if it makes any difference?
