October 04, 2011, 05:08:46 am
Hi

How do I do a search on all contacts excluding those who are in a specific group?

Thanks

Under the Search menu, see Search Builder. You can "exclude" contacts using that.

hi,
--do a basic search for all the contacts in the database and create a new group called e.g. "all contacts"
--use the custom search called "» Include / Exclude Contacts in a Group / Tag"
--in the include groups section, select the "all contacts" group you created in the first step
--in the exclude groups section, select the group you want to exclude

hope this helps,
cynthia

ps it would be very helpful to those who might want to help you if you would update your forum profile and specify which version of Civi and which CMS you are using

Thank you for the replies:

Hershel - I tried this option first but could not find any reference to a group(s) id field in the second dropdown after selecting individual (or anything for tags either)  - the last item before listing custom fields is 'website'.  This was also reported in posting http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,19869.msg82932.html#msg82932

Is there a configuration setting that would control what is listed in the field list?

Cynthia - thanks for the tip on updating my profile with system versions - I have done that now. I will try your suggested method and see how I go until I can resolve the main problem of groups and tags not listing in the search builder field select dropdown.

Phil

On the Drupal 6 demo here http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/contact/search/builder?reset=1 after website comes custom fields, correct. After the custom fields I see Group(s).

Also check the Include / Exclude groups custom search (Search menu -> Custom Searches):

Dave - that's a helpful search screen you mention but it's not showing in my dropdowns (but does show if I copy in the last part of the address, custom?csid=4&reset=1).  How can I access it directly within our site?

all custom searches are not exposed in the dropdown (we've revised this in more recent versions)

u can manually add this to your navigation menu

Thank you all for your updates.

In reply to Hershel - I have double checked my dropdown list and there is definitely nothing in the list for Groups, Tags or Notes. After 'Website' does come my 2 lots of custom fields for the 2 custom datasets I have created but there is nothing after the last custom field.

I am working around it using the include /exclude groups custom search (using an 'all contacts' group as suggested) but I would like to work out why the groups/tags options aren't included at the end of the drop down  list in Search Builder for the .

Thanks - Phil
