Error creating event from template

Joomla 1.7
database tables do not start with jos_

when creating an event from a template I get the following error after filling the rest of the details and clicking "continue"

Sorry. A non-recoverable error has occurred.
DB Error: unknown error
Error Details

Return to home page.

Works fine if I create the event without using a template
